The US "Transcontinental Railroad" was completed on May 10, 1869, with the ceremonial driving of the "Last Spike" at Promontory Summit, Utah. Rail track had been laid over 1,756 miles between Sacramento, California and Omaha, Nebraska over a period of six years by the Union Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroads.
