The South Carolina state quarter coloring page shows an image of the quarter issued in 2000 that represents the state of South Carolina.
Atop an outline of the state, the South Carolina quarter shows a star over Columbia, the state's capital. The quarter also has the state tree
(Palmetto), state flower (Yellow Jessamine), state bird (Carolina Wren), and state nickname ("The Palmetto State").
The palmetto tree also decorates the state's flag and seal. Why is this tree so important to South Carolina? Because its wood helped defeat
the British at the Battle of Sullivan's Island. When the British fired cannonballs at Fort Moultrie, the fort's spongy palmetto logs absorbed
the shock of the cannonballs. The fort came out unharmed, and the colonists had their first major naval victory of the American Revolution!
